Level 1 Geography
In Level 1 Geography students will gain experiences, knowledge and understanding to learn about:
- Natural weather events arond the world such as tropical cyclones
- The impact and legacy of global pandemics
- The sustainable use of an environment - a case study into Lake Ellesmere
- Conducting geographic field research to collect, analyse and present data (involves a field trip)
- Contempory geographic issues - what will we do with the land in the Red Zone?
- Geographic skills; these include: interpretation of topographic maps, sketch maps, weather maps, spatial patterns, tables of data, cartoons, photographs and written extracts. The construction of sketch maps, cross sections and graphs.
Level 2 Geography
In Level 2 Geography students will gain experiences, knowledge and understanding to learn about:
- Global events such as the processes and impacts of volcanoes and earthquakes
- The natural landscapes of the South Island High Country and the Amazon Rainforest
- Contemporary geographic issues - Freedom Campers in New Zealand
- Conducting geographic field research to collect, analyse and present data about the human impact on Aoraki Mount Cook National Park (involves a field trip)
- Geographic skills concepts- Continue to build the skills and critical thinking skills.
Level 3 Geography
In Level 3 Geography students will gain experiences, knowledge and understanding to learn about:
- Cultural processes in the delelopment of the Queenstown tourism industry (involves a field trip)
- Conducting geographic field research to collect, analyse and present data about the human impact on of the tourism industry in Queenstown (involves a field trip)
- Investigating a contempory issue of the student's own choice
- The global geographic issue of conflict diamonds and the impact this has on people, places and society
- Application of geographic skills and concepts.
